Illuminate returns to the San Antonio Botanical Garden on November 20 for its third year: a route of a little over a mile through the garden after dark, lined with handcrafted lanterns and larger-than-life displays. It runs through January 10 with entry by half-hour time slot, and the garden does not guarantee tickets at the door. By day, the Native Plant Wildscape Demonstration Garden at Phil Hardberger Park shows native Texas plants and is open sunrise to sunset. Here is what both involve and a table on either side of the lanterns.
We run Botanical Garden Near Me, a directory of public gardens and arboretums across the United States, and we are a guest here. Top of San Antonio asked for the gardens. They supplied the restaurants.
The plan, in order
See the Wildscape garden in daylight; it is open whenever Phil Hardberger Park is open, sunrise to sunset. Then head to the Botanical Garden for an Illuminate time slot. Slots run every half hour from 5:30 p.m., the last entry is 9 p.m., and everyone must be out by 10:30 p.m. The garden is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Two special nights are included with a ticket: a sensory-friendly hour on Tuesday, December 1, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., when the trail can be walked without sound, and Family Night on Friday, December 11, 6 to 9 p.m.
Illuminate

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is at 555 Funston Place, just northeast of downtown. It opened on May 3, 1980, holds about 1,000 plant species, and includes the Kumamoto En, an authentic Japanese garden given by sister city Kumamoto in 1989, and the Lucile Halsell Conservatory designed with the architect Emilio Ambasz. Illuminate runs November 20, 2026 through January 10, 2027, on an outdoor route of a little over a mile. Tickets are $29.99 for adults and $26.99 for children 3 to 12, each plus a $3 fee; members pay $24.99 with no fee, children under 3 need no ticket, and a Flex Pass is $39.99. Tickets are non-refundable, and changing a date or time costs $10. On-site parking is a $20 pass bought ahead, not included in the ticket. By day, admission is $18 Monday to Thursday and $22 Friday to Sunday for adults, with free on-site parking.

It is a registered Monarch Waystation and a certified pollinator habitat, with plants such as Gregg’s mistflower, blackfoot daisy, autumn sage and rock rose. It sits near the park’s Urban Ecology Center and is open whenever the park is open, sunrise to sunset.

Lunch near the Wildscape garden. About 2 miles away, open from 9 a.m. daily. A husband-and-wife counter where the Philly cheesesteak is cooked to order; the Italian cold cut sub and pastrami on rye round it out.

Cuban · San Antonio
Dinner before Illuminate. Under a mile from the garden, open from 4 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday and from 11 a.m. Friday to Sunday; closed Mondays. Ropa vieja, a Cuban sandwich and street tacos.

Brewpub · San Antonio
After Illuminate. About 2 miles from the garden, open until 11 p.m. (midnight on Friday and Saturday, 9 p.m. on Sunday). A brewpub where the wood-fired pizza holds its own against the beer list.
